Welcome back to our Women-Owned Business Series! We’re highlighting Mildred from Mimaami Organics, an ethical and ecofriendly skincare line inspired by products used by African mothers. Learn about how her struggle with her daughter’s eczema led her to start her own business and product line!
First, tell us about your business and anything special we should know about it or you.
Mimaami Organics creates simple yet effective skin care products that are ethically sourced, ecofriendly and affordable. Our products are inspired by traditional beauty secrets from African mothers.
Why do you feel a connection to your work?
I feel connected to my work because I was inspired to start this when I couldn’t find an effective moisturizer for my daughter’s eczema. A wise tip from my mother led me to try shea butter which was the magic product I needed all along. Also, shea butter is considered women’s gold because of the economic opportunities it provides to women in the Subsaharan region of Africa. I am very happy knowing my business is helping empower these women.
As a business owner, community is everything. In what ways do you serve your community and how has your community served you?
I serve my community by participating and partnering with other brands and organizations for women empowerment. I also donate 10% if my sales towards maternal and child health initiatives in Africa and the African American communities in the U.S.
What advice would you give to young women who want to start a small business?
My advice to women who want to start a business is to create and fall in love with the idea but be willing to pivot to make that dream a reality.
What women inspire you and why?
The women who work along the shea butter supply chain who are forgotten, they inspire me because they have the determination to make it even though they barely make a living from it. Their determination to keep their family traditions inspires me the most.
What do you think are the most significant challenges for women business owners or women in leadership positions?
I think juggling family and work. It is a constant struggle to cook, clean and take care of the kids while working full-time.
