Victoria Alexander Featured in HearstLab on How to Prep for a Conference Like a Pro

I was recently featured in a piece by HearstLab on how to prep for a conference like a pro — sharing some of the small habits that make a real difference once you’re standing in a room full of strangers with a badge around your neck.

One of the tips that resonated most with people was about turning a conference from a string of one-off hallway chats into something that actually sticks:

“I create a dedicated WhatsApp group and invite attendees who I’m excited to connect with to join me in sharing what talks they are going to or to find ways to meet up at the conference. After the event, it’s an easy place to share highlights and notes. This has helped me really get to know people and stay in touch with them.”

It sounds simple, but it’s made a real difference in how I show up at conferences. The connections that actually turn into something rarely happen during the keynote — they happen because someone followed up. A group chat is just a low-effort way to make sure that follow-up actually happens, instead of letting a great conversation die in a stack of business cards.

If you’ve ever left a conference with a dozen new contacts and no real plan for staying in touch, I think you’ll relate to this one.
