For many years now a row of storefronts on Smith Street have been out of commission. As you can see in the photo above, there are four or five in a row (with 252 Smith Street being in the middle) that have been boarded up for a while. Whenever we have passed by in the past these places are quiet and have seemed abandoned. For those of you who don’t know this area, Smith Street runs through Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill and has dozens and dozens of restaurants, bars and shops running along it. There is also a lot of turnover, with spots opening and closing monthly. With so much action in this neighborhood, it’s odd to see a space go uninhabited for so long, let alone a whole row of storefronts. We have seen the work orders pasted on the wooden boards but last week was the first we noticed workers coming in and out and there was quite a crew of them! Progress!
