James Rando‘s paintings feel like faces caught mid-conversation with themselves. Bold black outlines carve out fractured profiles and stacked forms, while blocks of mustard, coral, magenta, and slate hold everything together like stained glass. Look closely and the figures start to double and triple — a hand becomes a leaf becomes a wing, an eye becomes a window. There’s a looseness to the linework that feels almost improvised, like the pieces were built the way jazz gets built: one bold move answered by another.
This show is a celebration of that instinct — art that doesn’t sit still, made by an artist who clearly likes to let color do the talking. Set against Compère Collective’s warm, lived-in walls, Rando’s work turns the space into something between a gallery and a living room, which feels exactly right for Red Hook.
Join us for an evening of art, music, and community, with live music by Marye Lobb rounding out the night.
