Brooklyn Bridge is our ongoing series featuring our clients’ real stories of what buying in Brooklyn is really like. Buying a home anywhere is a challenge. But buying in Brooklyn is a true journey. Finding that just-right combination of affordability, location, style, and livability can sometimes feel overwhelming. That’s why we wanted to bring you this series, featuring the stories of real Brooklyn home-buyers and their experiences. Not only will it prepare you for what’s in store, it’ll help you see if Realty Collective might be the right fit for you. The series is also a celebration of what’s on the other side of the journey—a place to put down roots, build equity, and make as many holes in the walls hanging pictures as you like. A home.
Home-buying can be an overwhelming experience, especially if you’re new to the game. First-time buyer, and Realty Collective Client, who wanted to be referenced to as K for this story, understood the process was going to be a challenging one. But she said her assembled team not only kept her in the loop but taught her all she needed to know along the way.
“As a first-time buyer I had a lot of questions and nerves, so working with people who are really open with their information and keep you updated on what they’re doing and how the process is going is so important,” K said.
Finding the Right Neighborhood
RC Owner, Victoria Alexander, had the pleasure of guiding K through the home-buying process, ultimately matching K with her dream apartment. Though K wasn’t sure what home-buying would be like, she did know she wanted to live in Sunset Park. She was a resident for five years, so she knew all about what the neighborhood had to offer. And she suggests that other home-buyers do the same.
“I can’t imagine anything worse than buying a place that is so beautiful, only for everything around it to be difficult,” K said.
Victoria helped K score big with this vintage co-op, which claims to be the first co-op in America, nestled only blocks away from the park. With 9ft ceilings and bright South/West sun exposure, this gem had the right amount of space that K was looking for. Plus, she says that her neighborhood is quiet enough to give her peace of mind and is close enough to good food to give her plenty of options come dinnertime.
“It’s so easy to settle and not be worried about anything here,” K said. “We have plenty of storage space for all of our things and then some…it really blew me away once I started settling in,” K said.
Listen to the Experts
When it came to the nitty-gritty of home-buying, K said Victoria and the team she assembled were great at making her feel comfortable, lessening some of the burden she felt was on her shoulders. And as any first-time buyer knows, that burden can feel very heavy, especially when dealing with the details.
“If I ever had a question, it was all right there, and if I couldn’t easily find an answer to something I could message anyone on the team and they would answer almost right away,” K said. “Not to mention every recommendation they had for inspectors and movers were on point – everyone I talked to through them was really kind and made me feel like I always knew exactly what was going on.”
Having the right team together is the key to having a happy, exciting home-buying experience & one that is riddled with stress and anxiety, which was one of K’s strongest pieces of advice. And at RC, we do everything we can to ensure our clients feel safe, feel heard, and feel respected during the home-buying process. At the end of the day, we want our clients to be matched with their perfect place, with as little hassle as possible.
Making Herself at Home
After closing, K added some of her own personal details to make the place really hers. By putting fresh paint on the walls, re-staining some built-in wood furniture, and buying some new furniture, K made her vintage co-op into her own home.
We are thrilled to have matched K with her new space in Sunset Park. If you’re looking to go on your own buying-in-Brooklyn journey, get in touch. We’d love to help you find your BK home.
