Lou Reed Tai Chi Day Events in Brooklyn

Many of you may have heard that August 3rd, this Saturday, is officially Lou Reed Tai Chi day. Many of you are also thinking….”what does this entail”? Along with being a legendary musician, Reed also practiced Tai Chi for 30 years. You can read more about his studying the art and the inaugural international holiday here.

To celebrate on Saturday there are two major events, both which include demonstrations led by Lou Reed’s former teacher, Ren Guang Yi. One is at Celebrate Brooklyn, with the Tai Chi demo coming before the viewing of film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. The other is a morning meditation, classes and demonstrations at the Brooklyn Public Library. See below for an explanation of that event and click here for more info.

Late Brooklyn-born musician Lou Reed studied Tai chi for 30 years and was a passionate advocate for the practice to promote mental and physical well-being. Ren Guang Yi, Reed’s teacher for 12 years, and other teachers from different disciplines will lead a morning meditation in Central Library’s Grand Lobby followed by demonstrations and classes that represent many forms of Tai Chi. No experience is necessary to participate, in keeping with Reed’s belief that everyone can benefit from the Chinese martial art. In the week leading up to the event, patrons can also view Reed’s library of Tai Chi books and some of his weapons.
