Twas the week before New Year’s and all through the house, the kids were anxious to get out and do something fun…. And New York City is a such a fun place to be during the week after Christmas!
One of my favorite things to do during the holiday season is, act like a tourist. I love to take friends, especially those with kids, on an excursion around the city, see the holiday windows from the deck of an open-air bus, ice skate under the giant Christmas tree, and work our way through the best hot chocolate spots in NYC.
Another favorite indulgence is a trip to Lincoln Center for The Nutcracker. In my opinion, this ballet has something for kids of every age – dancing soldiers, giant fighting rodents, ballerinas, and a Christmas tree that grows like magic.
The New York Botanical Garden Train Show runs through mid-January 15, so it’s not too late to see their amazing model train displays. This year, NYBG also has an Evergreen Express train for kids to ride and holiday movie screenings.
The annual Kwanzaa celebration at the American Museum of Natural History is scheduled for Saturday, December 30th. The festival includes music, an international marketplace and holiday treats. The Brooklyn Children’s Museum will also celebrate Kwanzaa from Tuesday – Saturday, December 26th-30th.
Finally, for the last few days left before everyone returns to work and school, there are plenty of events at our local bookstores and libraries; craft spaces; indoor and outdoor skating; museum outings; and, of course, post-holiday shopping. Enjoy your week!
