How to Recycle Leftover Paint in NYC

Did you know that more than 80 million gallons of paint go unused every year in the United States? For NYC residents, that often means cans of half-used paint stacked in closets, basements, and hallways—uncertain what to do with them. Luckily, there’s now an easier and more sustainable option.

Since launching in New York State in 2022, PaintCare has made paint recycling accessible and convenient. The nonprofit program has already collected more than 2 million gallons of paint and partnered with over 370 drop-off sites across the state.

“Our program ensures paint is reused, recycled into new paint, or disposed of properly to minimize environmental impact,” says Andrew Radin, New York State Program Manager for PaintCare.

So what do you do if you can’t use or share your leftover paint? That’s where PaintCare comes in. Their neighborhood drop-off sites include local hardware stores, retail shops, and even government facilities, making it simple to drop off your extra cans the next time you’re out running errands.

It’s a win-win: less clutter at home and a healthier environment for everyone.
