Compére Collective Presents: Raices: A Group Exhibition

We have a summer full of art coming up! To follow our May exhibit with Grace Aki, we have Raices: A Group Exhibition set to open on Saturday, June 4th. This group exhibition is aimed to celebrate Latin American roots, and will feature a mixture of free and ticketed community events, workshops, and artist talks in order to uplift and support as many creatives, educators, local restaurants or vendors as possible.

Read the full description below – and please consider donating to help uplift the artists & creatives involved!

About the Exhibition

From the 5th – 24th of June, Raíces will also be holding mixture of free and ticketed community events, workshops, and artist talks in order to uplift and support as many creatives, educators, local restaurants or vendors as possible. Writing, silkscreen, dyeing workshops will be lead by local art collectives, paired with live dj sets. Performances, artist talks, and open discussions will be lead by the Raíces artists, as well as female curators, local art collectives, and educators.  A link to the google calendar listing the dates and tickets to events will be attached shortly.

As a dedication to social investment, no cuts will be taken from the participating artists. Instead, we require a 10%  donation from any art sales to mutual aid efforts. 5% will be donated to Voces – a nonprofit organization integrating expressive art therapies to the care of asylum seekers on the El Paso and Cuidad Juarez border. The other 5% gives back to NYC directly,  Direct donations will be kindly accepted and greatly appreciated throughout the month. A statement will be issued at the end of the month with the donation statements to each organization.

Documentation as a form of storytelling and preservation is important for the Raíces team. This proposed budget will also support a collection of video, photography, design, and illustration from the artists and events in order to create a book as a tangible memento from the month. This book will be self published and sold post exhibition.

Please contact Organizer for any inquiries about the exhibition, the artists, or the events. Raíces is continuing to accept event and workshop proposals for June. As an individual artist or collective, if you are interested in offering your services to the space, please reach out to Natasha Fortson at the contact form listed below.

This exhibition is being funded purely through grassroots efforts. The budget goal will cover services and events listed above, as well as damage insurance for the art pieces. Paying our gallery assistant, performers, workshop leaders, musicians, and educators fairly for their contribution is important to us. Promotional material will also be outsourced from illustrators, designers, and photographers. As an extension of gratitude for the ability to throw this event, Raíces aims to elevate as many members of the community as possible that align with the integrity of the exhibition. Thank you so much for your support!

Concept

A show centering the work of first-generation Latin American and immigrant artists currently and previously based in New York City. We ask the artists to consider the impact of space in both their home countries and their adopted homes. How can the feeling of home transform, become foreign, and be found again with the influence of movement? How can altering space both build and simultaneously break down one’s own perception and expression of self?

We consider how access to one’s roots largely correlates to the centering and fulfillment of the self. There is a tension at play we must also pay attention to : the more one uproots and replants, the more one can truly widen the scope in which they can experience and perceive the world. Yet, in the same process, a contradictory fragmentation of self can occur. We come together to honor and celebrate these roots, recognizing the beauty and strength of the uprooted self.
