October Events in and Around the City by Shyda Hoque

While it might not feel like fall just yet there are plenty of activities happening around NYC.  Here are just a few worth mentioning…
  • Bric Jazz Fest–  A kick-off concert with Antibalas.  There will be a week long showing of jazz-related films and talks followed by a marathon of performances from October 18th through October 20th. For more information visit BRIC.
  • Pumpkin Point on Governors Island–  Thousands of ripe fall pumpkins will be at Nolan Point on Governors Island. There will be live music, pumpkin painting for kids and surrounded by the fall foliage.  This is a great getaway that is only 8 mins by Ferry from Manhattan or Brooklyn.  There will also be Trick or Treating on October 27th.
  • Sleepy Hollow– You can take a Metro- North ride up to Sleepy Hollow.  The Horseman’s Hollow which is described as having a “high fear factor” is an interactive performance. As well as a dramatic performance of Washigton Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” For more information on Sleepy Hallow’s Halloween Events.
  • New York Botanical Gardens in the Bronx– See gigantic pumpkins from around the country for the Giant Pumpkin Weekend (October 20-21).  There will also be the  Spooky Pumpkin Nights (October 26-27).  Kids and adults can dress up in their costumes and go for a nighttime exploration of the gardens with flashlights and see scarecrows and monstrous pumpkins on display.
