Cover Letters—Not Just For Jobs Anymore
Aug 09, 2020 home buyers
You’re a working adult with a reliable job and an income good enough to buy a place in Brooklyn. All of these things are worth celebrating (especially right now!). But if you think your days of cover letters are behind you, it’s time to reconsider.
If you’re on the hunt for a new home, writing a personal letter to its current owners and their broker is always a good choice. It efficiently accomplishes a few things:
- It helps you clarify exactly why you want the place (if you’re having a hard time coming up with the “why,” that’s a clear sign to have a talk with your broker to make sure you’re making the right decision)
- It helps you understand how sellers “see” you beyond your financials (In what ways are you a good addition to the community? Why this neighborhood? Why this particular home?)
- It personalizes you to the sellers (Maybe that couple moving upstate because they had three kids in a two-bedroom place will see themselves in your just-married excitement?)
- And most importantly, it just might give you the edge on other potential buyers, all other factors being equal
It’s a simple step but you might be surprised to learn that the practice is relatively rare (kind of like getting an actual thank-you card anymore). So if you’ve found the perfect place—or just want to be ready for when you have—we’re sharing one of our buyer sample cover letters with you with notes to see what works and why, so you can replicate it for yourself.
