After a 14 month competition by cities across North America, Amazon decided to split its HQ2 with Long Island City, Queens and Crystal City, Virginia. According to their blog post Amazon will invest 2.5 billion each to both locations and will create 50,000 new jobs. The new campus in Queens will be in a energy-efficient space and will span 4 million square feet with the potential to expand to 8 million square feet. Since we are in a buyers market it would be a great time to invest in Long Island City, Astoria, Greenpoint and the Upper East Side and I also see other area of the G, 7, N and W train being desirable.
While this is an opportune time to invest, many local residents and politicians are concerned over the subsidies that Amazon received to move to NYC. Both the newly elected Democratic congresswoman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and conservative news commentator Tucker Carlson both called out the tax breaks given. Carlson said on his show, “Hate to admit it but Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has a very good point..The richest man in the world just got $2 billion in taxpayer subsidies? How does that work?”
The headquarters plan to open in 2019 and this will definitely shake up the already rising market in western Queens.
