As part of our celebration of the holidays — and as a thank you to the larger community that supports us all year long — Realty Collective is proud to feature the work of key non-profit organizations making the borough (and beyond) better every day. We’ve selected 10 non-profits to highlight and we encourage everyone to learn a bit about their respective missions and, if possible, to join us in making a small monetary donation to further their work. We thank them for everything they do and thank you for supporting a small, woman-owned Brooklyn business for nearly 20 years.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors is a grassroots coalition that’s been serving tenants, homeowners, and homebuyers since 1990 and “promotes racial justice while empowering low- and moderate-income New Yorkers to fight for, secure, and maintain quality housing and build financial assets.” Located in Sunset Park, one of the city’s fastest-changing neighborhoods and home to a large immigrant population at risk of being displaced.
NHN also extends beyond its neighborhood borders to assist neighbors in Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Coney Island, and Canarsie. Their work primarily falls under three broad mandates – tenant organizing and advocacy, first-time homebuyer education, and services for homeowners (including foreclosure prevention). It’s a tall order but NHN is committed to what they describe as, “sustainable homeownership for low- and moderate-income households,” a group of New Yorkers particularly hard-hit by New York’s ever-increasing cost of living.
Prospective buyers can learn from experts how to get their financial affairs in order, how to avoid predatory lending, and programs that offer down payment assistance. When it comes to those facing eviction, NHN’s experts are HUD-certified and can advise on any number of topics, including budgets, “refinancing options and loan modifications, obtain rescue funds and property tax reductions, and access other resources to help them resolve their financial hardships.” NHN’s tenant advocacy also covers everything from one-on-one help with specific landlord situations to organizing principles for buildings.
If you would like to join us in supporting their fight, please consider making a donation.
