10 Ways To Give Back: Realty Collective Celebrates the Work of the Brooklyn Family Justice Center

As part of our celebration of the holidays  — and as a thank you to the larger community that supports us all year long — Realty Collective is proud to feature the work of key non-profit organizations making the borough (and beyond) better every day. We’ve selected 10 non-profits to highlight and we encourage everyone to learn a bit about their respective missions and, if possible, to join us in making a small monetary donation to further their work. We thank them for everything they do and thank you for supporting a small, woman-owned Brooklyn business for nearly 20 years.

Those who experience domestic violence often feel trapped not just in a tenuous and scary home situation but mired down by the limitations and barriers of the justice system. Too often, it’s easy for survivors to fall through the cracks of a system that can be intimidating to navigate in the best of times, much less during a crisis. Enter the Brooklyn Family Justice Center (BFJC). This non-profit organization, operates under the auspices of the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence and the Kings County District Attorney’s Office.

The BFJC is not just a center; it’s a comprehensive support network for survivors. Imagine a place where lawyers, police, dedicated domestic violence prosecutors, counselors, clergy, and other service providers collaborate seamlessly under one roof. This is the essence of the BFJC—an innovative “one-stop shopping” solution for those seeking refuge and assistance.

Sanctuary for Families plays a vital role in enhancing the BFJC’s impact. Their children’s program, staffed by two compassionate counselors, offers individual and group counseling, along with phone and family assessments. Simultaneously, the legal services provided by the BFJC’s Assigned Domestic Violence Counsel are vital. From night court sessions to representing clients in extensive child support, custody, and visitation matters, the BFJC’s legal team works tirelessly to empower survivors on their journey to justice.

Notably, the BFJC’s commitment extends to immigrant domestic violence victims, with a full-time Immigration Law attorney dedicated to serving this vulnerable community in Brooklyn.

Supporting the Brooklyn Family Justice Center means contributing to a holistic approach to healing and justice and we’re proud to do our small part this holiday season. It’s about being part of a community that believes in empowering survivors and breaking the cycle of domestic violence. If that moves you too, consider learning more about the work they do.
