10 Days of Giving Back:  Opening Act

As part of our celebration of the holidays  — and as a thank you to the larger community that supports us all year long — Realty Collective is proud to feature the work of key non-profit organizations making the borough (and beyond) better every day. We’ve selected 10 non-profits to highlight and we encourage everyone to learn a bit about their respective missions and, if possible, to join us in making a small monetary donation to further their work. We thank them for everything they do and thank you for supporting a small, woman-owned Brooklyn business for nearly 20 years.

Opening Act is committed to closing what it calls New York City’s “arts education access gap” through quality theater instruction with students of color at under resourced schools across the city. Opening Act’s mission is informed by a set of core values, including showing up, listening, empowering, and – a classic to anyone familiar with improv – “yes, and.”

More than 7,000 New York students have answered that “yes, and” challenge since the organization’s beginnings in 2000.

Opening Act’s programming is comprehensive and offers both in-school and out-of-school experiences (not to mention ongoing programming for its alumni) and includes everything from after-school instruction to student summits, student leadership programs, and summer intensives.

Opening Act also hosts its annual YESfest, featuring a full day of live theater performances representing the schools it works alongside. Opening Act also offers several interesting volunteer opportunities – both for junior board members but also for those involved in theater arts who’d like to volunteer their time to work with students.

We’re thrilled to do our small part to support the work of this outstanding organization. If you would like to join us, you can make a donation here.
