10 Days of Giving Back: God’s Love We Deliver

As part of our celebration of the holidays  — and as a thank you to the larger community that supports us all year long — Realty Collective is proud to feature the work of key non-profit organizations making the borough (and beyond) better every day. We’ve selected 10 non-profits to highlight and we encourage everyone to learn a bit about their respective missions and, if possible, to join us in making a small monetary donation to further their work. We thank them for everything they do and thank you for supporting a small, woman-owned Brooklyn business for nearly 20 years.

God’s Love We Deliver (GLWD) offers a service many don’t think about, until they (or someone they love) needs it: free home delivery of “medically tailored meals for people too sick to shop or cook for themselves.” The organization’s work began at the height of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s when a hospice worker recognized that one of her patients was too ill to cook for himself and decided to do something about it.

Each day, hundreds of volunteers prepare, cook, package, and deliver food to those in need across the city – but something unique to GLWD is that each meal is medically tailored to each person who receives it. Serving so many who require specialized diets – including those for allergies, restrictions, specific consistency, preference, or medical needs – is no small feat. Adding to this challenge is the organization’s commitment to serving anyone too ill to cook (regardless of their income) for free, and all beginning within one week of a request for service.

The New Yorkers GLWD – a non-sectarian organization – now serve are no longer just those affected by AIDS, but any serious illness that might lead to hunger or malnutrition. That encompasses nearly 16,000 clients, children, and caregivers annually. As might be expected, this work takes a virtual army of volunteers and has a robust volunteer program for those who may be interested, including one-time, ongoing, and corporate options. You can learn more about their mission, outcomes, and giving opportunities here.
