Race Cars are Coming to Red Hook! by Sandra Manley

On July 15th and 16th, the International ePrix Formula E Car Championship will come to Red Hook. It is the first motor sports event to be held in New York City. The FIA-sanctioned ePrix is the world’s first fully electric, single-seater racing series.

The series was conceived in 2012, and the inaugural championship was held in Beijing in 2014. Previous races in the 2016-2017 season have been held in Hong Kong, Marrakesh, Buenos Aires, Monaco and Paris.

On race day, the event will begin with two practice sessions. A qualifying session takes place at noon and lasts roughly one hour. The five fastest drivers go out again to determine the top five starting positions, followed by the final race which last approximately 50 minutes.

Cars will reach speeds of close to 150 mph, as drivers wind their way through the waterfront near Pier 11 at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal (see this map). The city anticipates thousands of attendees. Tickets are available at here!
