New Coffee Shop coming to Bed Stuy by Ronica Webb

Our beloved hardware store at 1114 Bedford Avenue in Bed Stuy closed a few months ago and we were bummed. It was the cheapest around and always had salt in the coldest of winter storms. Still, I was eager to see what would happen with that space.  Well, to my excitement, I found out recently that it is turning into the Playground Coffee Shop, a new café and event space. It is slated to open in September and will sell printed zines, cassettes, VHS tapes and vinyl records. The owner, Zenat Begum, took over the spot when her father closed the hardware store, which was named Building Supply and Restoration. Once the family chose to close the hardware store she decided to create a communal space and gathering spot in the neighborhood. The Playground will be able to seat 25 people and the space will also be used as a place for community events, poetry slams, book events, art shows and artists performances. So if you’re looking to add to your VHS, record or cassette collection go check it out in September!
