Hamilton Creator Helps Washington Heights Bar Renew Lease by Shyda Hoque

After seeing so many vacant shops and restaurants around town, I started a trivia contest that included photos prompting people to “name the empty storefront” a few years ago. I am elated to know that one beloved business managed to stay put with help from friends including Lin Manuel Miranda. It was uplifting to see that the bar Coogans in Washington Heights was able to negotiate a high rent hike and received help from friends including Hamilton creator Lin Manuel Miranda who frequented Coogans as a kid.  A lease extension was agreed to by Miranda’s Father, political consultant Luis A. Miranda Jr., along with borough president Gale Brewer and a deal was reached!  After 32 years beloved Coogans is here to stay and will not be another empty storefront.
